Bidding farewell to Romania

We’ve spent almost 3 months in Romania so far, with the lion’s share of our time in Transylvania. Ever since I was a little kid watching monster shows, I’ve wanted to be in Transylvania. And we got to be here for Halloween! While it was completely a nonevent, it’s just fun to say we were here for that holiday. Romania has been an unexpected surprise really. I figured I would like it, but I didn’t anticipate completely falling in love...

Visiting Sibiu

We had heard some good things about this mid-size city in Romania, so we figured we would check it out. We had already declined it as a possible base because there are rarely good airfares from its airport, and it’s about a 6-hour train ride to Bucharest. That’s just too far from a good hub to be a decent base for travel. However, in view of the fact that Sibiu also served as the European Capital of Culture in 2007, we definitely felt...

Prejmer’s fortified medieval church

I really adore visiting cathedrals, basilicas, and old churches, but I had never had the opportunity to visit a fortified medieval church before coming to Romania. Rasnov, A great day trip from Brasov

As I’ve indicated previously, Brasov is a great base from which one can explore Romania, especially Transylvania. There are plenty of day trips that are easy to do from here. We recently visited nearby Rasnov and had so much fun I wanted to make sure to write about it. Fellow travel bloggers Travis and Calli of Have Blog Will Travel joined us on our trip. It’s always more fun to do things with people whose company you enjoy. Getting...

Visiting Europe via Romania

If you’ve been following our time in Romania, you know many of the reasons why we love it here and think it would be a good base. I wanted to highlight a bit more about using Romania as a travel base, however. Romania is in a great location in Europe. While its position being surrounded by other countries wasn’t always a good thing in its past, it offers some advantages in the present day. One of which is being served by many low-cost...

Visiting Brasov

This charming medieval city is found in central Romania, which makes it a perfect base for exploring more of Romania and some of the nearby countries. Being in the city of Brasov is like existing in two different worlds. The historic center occupies the medieval section of the town, which was founded in the early 13th century, although they have found some archaeological evidence that the area was inhabited as early as 9500 BCE. A...
