Things to do in Breckenridge

Colorado is famous for its skiing and its ski resorts. Aspen and Vail are known worldwide, and the former is a hotbed for celebrity A-listers. There are several wonderful mountain towns in the Centennial State, but Breckenridge ranks very high on my list of favorites. While many people focus on Breck only during the winter, it’s actually a great place to visit year round.

Skiing

Obviously, this is the major attraction. This map helps show why it’s such a popular place for skiiers. Unlike some of the hotspots nearby, Breckenridge is more affordable and easier to reach. Anyone who has driven through the mountains during ski season knows the traffic can be an absolute time killer. This is another thing that makes Breckenridge’s closer proximity to the foothills popular.

Winter Activities

This marvelous mountain town offers quite the array of activities for $20 or less (many of them are free)! And you know how parking in busy small towns can be a royal pain? Hop on the Breck bus for a free ride and leave the car parked.

  • Museums
  • Wine and Cheese Wednesdays
  • Gondola ride
  • Tubbing and sledding
  • Many festivals and events
  • Ice skating
  • Ski race course
  • Swimming, water slides, and hot tub
  • Live music
  • Snowshoeing and cross country skiing

and more! You can find a great list at this website.

Spring & Summer

Colorado is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, and Breck won’t let you down here either. Aside from my favorite mountain half & full marathon, there is plenty to do here including rock climbing, horseback riding, cycling, mountain biking to name a few.

This beautiful town was listed as one of the top 10 places to take the kids on a bike ride by USA Today. It is also home to a section of the famous 500-mile Colorado Trail.

Just how bike-friendly is Breckenridge? It was given silver-level recognition by the League of American Bicyclists.

While the views are already breathtaking (no pun intended) from the mountains and around the town, you can take that up a notch with a hot-air balloon ride.

Boating is popular here as is golf. And if you want to do a little gambling, there are shuttles between Breckenridge and the casino towns.

The recreation center is also quite impressive, and I love spending time near the riverwalk.

Just like with winter, there is a huge list of activities that can be done for free or for less than $20 in the warmer months, too. A favorite with kids and adrenaline junkies is the alpine slide. If you’re missing winter, you can still get out on the ice and do some skating, too.

Fall

I love coming up here and going mountain biking and hiking during the fall color season. It’s absolutely gorgeous, and the best sites are close by. Most of the summer activities continue until winter begins its frigid approach and everyone starts waxing their skis and boards.

Food & Drink

Another thing Coloradoans love is beer, and you will find more than enough microbreweries here to keep the most avid beer lover quite happy.

You will find restaurants and cafes catering to almost every type of cuisine. Briar Rose is one of my favorites. For a smaller-sized town, it sure offers quite a bit for food lovers.

When considering a trip to the beautiful Rocky Mountains, make sure to plan some time to visit Breckenridge. You’ll be really glad you did.
