Our hopes for 2014
I always look forward to the next year. Some years more so than others. Since we began our nomadic lifestyle in 2011, each year just seems to get better and better. So, naturally, we have high hopes for 2014. We began 2013 in Morocco. We were at the end of a 2-month housesit on an oasis. Definitely a cool place to begin a new year even if absolutely no one in that town celebrates the new year. We will be welcoming 2014 in Vienna,...
Unusual things we miss as nomads
We’ve been living as nomads for close to 1000 days! When you travel long term, it’s obvious there will be some things you miss. Tigger misses having local friends, sometimes a permanent base, and we both miss having a pet. A lot. Then there are the small things that you don’t really think about until you’re on the road for awhile and can’t find them. Sometimes these cravings can be quite odd. We’ve been in Romania for almost 3 months and have done some short trips while here. It has been quite lovely to leave the suitcase behind and just carry a messenger bag. But. . . Well, we aren’t really feeling the whole being rooted thing. We adore...
Confessions of a Scrooge
For most of my adult life, I have absolutely despised Christmas and the whole holiday season. As a child, it was a bit different because my maternal family are Jewish, so I grew up with Channukah. While my cousin, who had wanted to become a rabbi instead of an attorney, would become angry with his wife for serving green and red Jell-O (“They don’t make it in white and blue!”) and would seethe as me and the other kids sang Christmas...
Embracing the mundane
We tend to be rather adventurous, always looking for something new to experience, or a new area to explore. Generally, when we first arrive in a new place, we drop our stuff off wherever we’re staying, and we hit the road to explore. We are coming up on our 2nd month in Romania, and most of that time has been spent in one city. In reviewing our last year, that’s the longest we’ve spent in one place since the oasis in Morocco a year...
