The Netherlands has a huge amount to offer potential tourists. Here’s a list of top destinations to consider when planning your next holiday.
Amsterdam
A charming, beautiful city riddled with over 60 miles of canals and over 1,500 bridges. Construction on the canals began in the 17th century, and the three main canals form concentric rings around the city, known as the grachtengordel. For a truly authentic experience consider renting a houseboat and enjoying a lazy, relaxing experience on the water. For the culturally inclined, the newly renovated Rijksmuseum houses outstanding works of art by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Van Gough and others, and the Anne Frank House is definitely worth a visit. Don’t forget the world’s only floating flower market, a sight you do not want to miss.
West Frisian Islands
For the adventurous and outdoor-inclined holidaymaker consider making a trip to the West Frisian Islands. With the help of licensed guides, several of the islands can be reached by walking over mudflats during low tide. Alternatively, regular ferries depart from the mainland, and specialist operators conduct guided tours. Bicycle is the best way to explore the islands, and WadFietsen offers a 7 day sailing, cycling and freedom tour. More information can be found on their website.
Kinderdijk
For those intent on seeing some of the Netherlands’ famous windmills (more than 1,000 still exist) the largest concentration, almost 20, can be found near the village of Kinderdijk. The windmills keep the ever-rising seawater from flooding the land, as a significant part of the local area is located 7 meters below sea level. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, Kinderdijk is a fascinating and unique day trip within striking distance of Rotterdam. More information can be found here: http://www.kinderdijk.com/.
Hoge Veluwe National Park
5,400 hectares of healthland, sand dunes, peat bogs and woodland make this national park a beautiful day out. A huge range of flora and fauna awaits you, along with a visitors centre and the Country Residence Museum. Or you can just explore, enjoying the designated routes and the outdoors. Bicycles are available for free to visitors, as much of the park is inaccessible by car. The website has more details.
Duinrell Campsite, Wassenaar
For campers, especially those with kids, the Thompson Al-Fresco Duinrell campsite is ideal. The 4-star parc features one of the most exciting water slides in Europe, and its pool was voted in the top 20 worldwide. Magic shows and roller coasters ensure that the children will never be bored, and a nearby beach and mature forest give you the chance to get away from it all.
