That doesn't surprise me, but it's too bad. I think it's probably easier for a younger person to go there and make friends. I think there is also a bit of pushback from the jump in tourism, and their membership in the EEA has brought them many more foreigners. I'm not so sure they're overly comfortable with that even though it helps them maintain a high standard of life.

The Icelandic people were certainly an unusual bunch. I found people in Reykjavik to be friendly and had good customer service but in the smaller towns not so much. There were a few times where we would go into a half empty cafe/restaurant and were told they were too busy to serve us.

PS The first woman head of State was in Argentina

I found Iceland to be a seriously cool and weird place at the same time. Sounds like you really got under the country's skin, as it were. I didn't know they don't have a military, but I'm not surprised. I have a friend whose mother is Icelandic but grew up in the US and she moved to Reykjavik a few years ago, but just recently left because she found it really hard to make close friends, despite the fact that she already had ties to the country. Her experience was that people already had all the friends they wanted and weren't really interested in investing the time in getting to really know outsiders, which given how isolated it is, is...understandable? I don't think she meant that she found the people xenophobic, though.
