Thanks so much, Steph. Prior to writing this I’d spent about a half hour reading about peoples dreams and hopes for their impending round the world trips and generated a lot of thoughts and feelings for me as I recalled what brought me to being on our own trip right now.

Having the strength to fight was difficult at times, but having someone there really made a difference. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be a partner or friend. I had a deep conversation with a colleague at my last job about their own personal struggles and where they were in the life and internal happiness, and that really helped too.

There’s always someone to talk to, myself included.

I admire you Dale for sharing your personal story and Franca for sticking with you and helping you out through the Dark times. I am sure it wasn’t easy for both of us. Kudos to Dale for having the courage to share his story with us. As someone who has (& still does) struggled with depression, I know how hard it can be to accept your feelings of self-loathing and despair without giving in to them and working to better your life. It’s such a deep source of shame for so many people, but posts like this are a good reminder that these deeply personal battles don’t have to be fought alone. I’m so glad that Dale has managed to push through to the other side of this and that travel has brought the meaning to his life he felt was missing. Having had the great pleasure to meet Dale in real life several times, but I can certainly say that he deserves every ounce of happiness he has managed to summon to his life!
