We don’t really celebrate it. My kids do for school, and my mother makes sure the kids get a small valentine token (but then she looks for any excuse to spoil the grands). But in general, we’re not big on buying “tokens” of love on any day, but especially that one. Our anniversary is 2 days before, so that is a much more important day for us and the one I choose to remember and celebrate, because that’s our day, the day we chose each other. My husband shows me loves me all year, so I certainly don’t need a day of “consumerism” for him to show me that. 🙂

Even though I’m happily married, I totally agree. It’s much more romantic when my husband surprises me with flowers on any day of the year that isn’t Valentine’s Day. To me, Valentine’s Day is just a commercial day where restaurants cost twice what they normally do.

In reply to Jo. One definitely feels like they're a freak on parade when eating out or doing other things during V Day. Last night I found it particularly nauseating because almost everyone on the metro was a couple making out.

I personally don’t mind being single on Valentine’s Day but what I don’t enjoy is the looks of pity from those others. I took myself to a restaurant for dinner alone last night. I do this EVERY evening when I travel but last night I received looks as though I was a little bit more pathetic than I would have been in the same place the day before or the day after. Fortunately, I’m thick skinned and enjoyed my tapas and cava regardless of the stares 🙂

In reply to anne. That sounds like a fun way to celebrate! Someone else mentioned that it can be a day to celebrate friends and other kinds of love besides just between couples, and I think that's a great idea.

In reply to Lucie. It is kind of fun to celebrate with your kids. Neither Tigger nor I are all that interested in it, so we don't celebrate it. But we have tons of other things we celebrate throughout the year, so it's all good.

I have decided to call “Valentine’s Day” by the translation of the Spanish way of talking about February 14: Love and Friendship Day (El día del amor y del amistad).
That’s a nice reminder that romantic love is NOT the only form of love there is. And kudos to all the people who celebrate with their children, making it a family day (I hope they DO get some “adult time” afterwards too!)

Amen to that! Although I do like to get something for my daughter, my husband and I just enjoy the day like any other and try to celebrate in little ways throughout the year. My best Valentine’s Day were ones I spent with my girl friend, we go out to dinner and drink wine and have a great old time, just for fun. :))
