The World is Your Oyster, What are You Waiting For?

PSA: Travelling the world does not have to be a pipe dream.

Believe it or not, there are a number of ways you can earn money and travel the world wherever and whenever you want. Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) is one of the more popular options right now—and it’s totally doable.

All you need is a TEFL course – from an internationally-recognised TEFL course provider, of course – and you can be ready to change your life as you know it.

A TEFL course should be at least 120 hours, and it can be done 100% online, 100% face-to-face, or a combination of the two.

Once you’ve done a TEFL course, you’ll know everything you need to know about learning English, teaching English, classroom management, lesson planning, learner styles, teaching methodologies, and you’ll even have a better understanding of the English language in general.

The only problem you’re going to have is deciding where you want to go first! Which is where The TEFL Academy comes in. They have just published their World Factbook 2021 – and it’s a thing of beauty.

With information on over 100 countries, it’s a must-read before you start applying for jobs. In it you’ll find the lowdown on average teaching salaries, living costs, popular areas, transport options, tourist destinations, weather and even local foods you should try, for any country that you might be considering. So you can either read through the guide to see which country interests you, or you can look up a country you already have in mind to make sure it’s everything you think it is.

On the other hand, if you’d rather travel the world from the comfort of your own home, you can teach English online. Think about it: no commute, flexible hours and an endless supply of eager students. You can teach a 6-year-old in Beijing in the morning, a 30-something Spaniard in the afternoon and a Mexican teenager just before bed. Crossing the globe without leaving your couch!

All you need to enter the wonderful world of online teaching is a good laptop, a microphone or headset, a reliable internet connection and a quiet place to teach – no fancy equipment needed! Then there are three options for you to try:

  • You can sign up with one of (literally) hundreds of online teaching companies and wait for the company to schedule your lessons;
  • You can upload an introductory video to a teaching platform and wait for the students to book with you directly,
  • Or you can work as a freelancer and find your students independently.

Sound easy? That’s because it is.

Whether you choose to live and work abroad or work online from the comfort of your home office, if you’re looking to find those greener pastures, teaching English as a foreign language is definitely something that should be on your bucket list for 2021.
