So many parents take so many things teens do and say personally. Just can't do that. It isn't about you.

Although I don't have a teen yet, this post is so spot on! I think back to when I was a teen and going through hell, and I didn't get the type of understanding or time that I needed at that phase of my life. Most teens I don't think do, as you pointed out. And not taking things personally, that is so true. They are going through a lot!

HAHAHA! Too funny. Sometimes Tigger asks questions and squirms at the responses. When he first asked where babies come from I made sure to find out exactly what he was asking. Then I gave him a basic description. He had more questions, so I ended up drawing a uterus with fallopian tubes and explaining that part of the process. "Weird," he said as he walked away. lol

Definitely a different dynamic. But like you said, it's just something you've always done. Too many parents don't really start paying attention to what their child has to say until they're older. A 3-year-old can be quite insightful! I'm so glad you have that relationship with him!

Glad you found us and hope you stick around!

It all begins when their little. Do that part well, and the teens are so much less painful. lol TV shows, movies, billboards, etc., are all making things a lot more apparent for kids I think. We definitely have to be ready to have those conversations at an early age.

So very true! And if you won't make time for what he feels is important now, you'll regret it later for sure.

Thank you for the very kind compliment!

What excellent points! My son is 12 and I can so relate to the endless Minecraft monologues and funny video viewings. I remind myself during each one of these occasions that even if I haven't a clue what he is talking about, it is important to him and just important that I listen.

The children you have helped raise have been extremely fortunate in having you!

Great post as usual Talon, I love your insight. Our oldest is 12, but I would say we've been surprised at how early we needed to talk about tough stuff with her. Access to the internet is opening our kids eyes perhaps a little earlier than expected, and your wise words would be useful for parents of pre-teens as well. It sounds like you and Tigger have a wonderful relationship, well done, you must be doing a great job!

Hi Talon,
I recently came across your blog and am loving it!
As a single Mum by choice (had my son on my own through donor insemination) with a little boy who is 5, I am a little worried about the puberty years only because I don't have experience first hand about being a boy going through it.
Communication is a massive key to parenting any age of children, my son comes out of class and we talk all about his day, who he played with what he learnt, if he got in trouble etc. So many parents ask me how I get him to talk and tell me stuff . . . .it's just something we have been doing since he was young and I think to there is a different dynamic when it is just the two of you :-).
I look forward to more posts!

I remember when our son was about 9-years-old and he asked "the" question. I answered honestly without too much graphic detail. He listened, thought about it and then said, "That's the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life." I'll never forget that moment for as long as I live because if you think about it, it is pretty damn funny. :)
