Itinerary

We began our journey on 4 May 2011 with Cozumel, Mexico.

For a map providing more details of locations we’ve visited, check out our map.  You can zoom in or out, drag it around, make it go full screen, etc.

We plan to explore most of South America before heading onward.  Some of the other places we plan on visiting:

Morocco, Egypt, Madagascar, Kenya, Ethiopia, and other parts of Africa.

France, Spain, Italy, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Turkey, Greece, Croatia, Russia, Iceland, and many other parts of Europe and Scandinavia.

Laos, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Burma (Myanmar), Indonesia, China, and other areas of Asia.

Australia, New Zealand, and as much of the South Pacific as we possibly can.

And one of our dream destinations is Antarctica.

Thanks. Yes, flexibility will be key for sure. Leaving plenty of space for spontaneity. :)

LOL! Sorry, thought I had already told you and Patti G.

You might want to reconsider Egypt

    • Anonymous

We’ll see. We won’t be there until around Oct & a lot can change by then. Plus the probs are mostly in Cairo, and there’s more to Egypt than Cairo.

This is an amazing itinerary – I would love to do the same. However, I am wondering, and I hope this isn’t too personal, but where are you getting the money to do all of this traveling? Four days in Mexico cost me nearly $2000 between flights, rooming, and sight-seeing. This trip is my dream, but I could never afford it… *sad face*

It’s all in how you travel. We’re going during low season, so for 2 people our airfare was about $430 total. Couchsurfing saves you lodging costs, and hostels and guest houses are fairly inexpensive. Taking organized tours will cost you a LOT more than hiring a local guide. Avoiding tourist restaurants and places also saves you significant money. For instance, in Peru the restaurants in the tourist section averaged about $10 a meal or more, but a few blocks away the same meal would cost me $2-3. Breakfast in many places was about $8, but I ate for $2. I’ll also be working while we travel.

  • jaidels

Out of curiousity, what kind of work are you planning on doing while travelling? I would love to do something like this but am trying to figure out how. Thanks!

I do some writing, but most of my income is coming from medical transcription. When we are staying put somewhere for a long period, I’ll also plan on teaching English.

Would really like to. Don’t know if it will happen this trip though. Pretty expensive.

Such a cool thing you’re doing.  I think most of us have kids and become afraid to decouple from the matrix.  Good luck.

    • 1dad1kid

Thank you! And I believe you’re right. Some people also have a misconception that once you have kids you can’t travel.
