From what I found they rotate the video every 2 years. I guess that's good. I agree with you. It looks like they were trying way too hard to be artsy.

I read about the controversy while I was looking up some facts. Made me feel better.

We did go to the Berlin Wall Memorial which was WAY better and more interesting. I'll be writing about that.

The interesting facts are that both sites are rather controversial in Berlin. The style of Holocaust memorial always provoked a lot of opposition in Berlin and throughout Germany - against all this it was pushed through by the then government.
The history of the East Side Gallery is also quite interesting. Everybody was so keen to see the wall disappear, and so many people went to chip away at every possible section of the wall (often then selling these tiny colored concrete chips as expensive souvenirs), that it was almost too late when officials realized that some of the wall should be conserved as reminder of the past. Now the East Side Gallery is threatened by developments behind it, where new apartments are going up along the river. Every developer is taking the 'Senat' (Berlin's city government) to court in a fight to have a section of the gallery removed to gain vehicle access to their new buildings...
Did you go and visit the Wall Memorial? I think this manages to provide a much deeper reaching experience of the historical context. http://www.berliner-mauer-gedenkstaette.de/en/

I found most of the memorials in the park to be a bit odd to be fair. I felt like they were trying too much to be cryptic and artsy on the memorials, but it did feel like, unless you were looking for them, and knew exactly what you were after, you'd be very confused about what they were all about!

During my visit though (May 2014), the LGBT one had different clips on a loop. Some showed gay or lesbian couples kissing, while others showed gay / lesbian families, or couples in romantic situations which were not specifically sexual. I guess this is more inclusive than what you saw, and I got to admit I actually kinda liked it!

We had the same thought when we arrived at the Holocaust memorial. It must not be right when the kid is making the comments. Teaching respect but see such lack of respect. Basically, it was a picnic area. As for the LGBT memorial, yeah, totally agree. We stayed in the east side and the street art was amazing. Berlin is definitely a place we will go back to too.
