Spain is amazing!!!! Although I also love the poorer countries, Spain is particularly fascinating since it has a legacy of history (Roman Visigothic, Moorish, imperialst, etc.), geography (broders both Atlantic & Med. waters) that other countries cannot match.

Also, its regions are so diverse and have their own sub-cultures to offer! (And lol…sorry lady, but Spain is definitely First World, not Second World).

I could go on and on. Sorry, but I’d take SPAIN before ANY Third-World country anyway.

I’m getting a lot of similar comments from people about Madrid. It’s especially worse when coming from Latin America. The attitudes and people are just so night & day.

We’re enjoying Granada MUCH more. Not sure about Seville. We’re both kind of ready to hit Morocco, but I would like to see it before we leave. Of course, we can always come back up after Morocco, too.

In reply to Mary. Hopefully, things will go smoothly for you. Maybe skip Madrid and go to smaller towns instead. We've enjoyed Granada much more than Madrid.

In reply to Lisa @chickybus. Definitely agree with you. We're enjoying Spain more now that we're in Granada, but I'd still take Latin America any day over Spain. "Third world" is just more in line with my heart I guess.

I haven’t been to too many cities in Spain, but of the ones I’ve been, Madrid was my least favorite. It does have a rather generic feel to it, although at night it can be quite magical during the Paseo. Will you be going to Sevilla at all? I liked Granada – I can’t even remember where we stayed now, but Andalucia in general was warmer and more laid back than Madrid.

I love this post, thanks fr being so honest! I also prefer the third world, last time I was in the US I must have had 3-5 panic attacks..which I never have. It has become so uncomfortable to me and downright overwhelming. We head to Spain soon and I am so grateful to read this and be able to prepare myself for these feelings.

There’s so much I could say in this comment, but I’ll try to keep it short. I lived in Ecuador and in Spain (Barcelona). I see some of Spain as ‘2nd world’, by the way. At least, that’s how it was when I lived there. I had to get a special portable heater (that was a bit expensive) and buy tanks of gas to put in it. How? By yelling out the window at the Pakistani immigrant who was pushing a cart down the street. This was in 2001!

I, too, prefer the developing countries. There’s a certain magic to them–and the warmth of the people is incredible. I did have some great experiences in Spain (especially when I traveled there–living there was very different). But I personally prefer Latin America.
