Hiking in Greece

There are a wide range of hiking trails in Greece. Some lead to look out points, from where the magnificent rolling landscape can be viewed. Others take you past historic buildings and the natural habitats of native plant and animal species. It is even possible to book a guided walk past some of the sites outlined in this article.

Samaria Gorge

Walkers in good physical shape are encouraged to head along the challenging trail to this magnificent gorge. Along the way you will pass gently flowing streams and shallow pools, which act as a haven for wildlife. You’ll undoubtedly be ready for a delicious Greek meal after completing the six hour round trip.

Imbros Gorge

The terrain along the path to the Imbros Gorge is rough and rocky, so you should be wearing a hard-wearing pair of boots. En route to the main site you will have the opportunity to pet a friendly donkey and see the mountain goats munching their way through the vegetation. You may even stop off and indulge in olives purchased from the local market.

Plastira Lake

This is the place to come for a gentle jaunt among the colourful and aromatic flora species of Greece. You could pack a lunch consisting of Greek Psomi bread and feta cheese for eating on the water front. The writers of the Directline Holidays Greece page have warned that sightings have been made of a great lake monster in this area. However, they haven’t been backed up with solid evidence as yet.

Kriaritsi Beach

You may well want to bring the kids for a walk along this picturesque beach. There will be the opportunity to stop off and splash about in the crystal clear waters and investigate the sea creatures in the rock pools. You may also enjoy the spectacular view from the Kriaritsi promontory.
